Poetry: The Saints (A Villanelle)

In my last post, I mentioned that I finally bought a copy of Boondock Saints. Watching it afterwards, I remembered that I wrote this piece for a poetry class a couple of years ago. Not sure how I feel about this poem, but here it is.

The Saints

Is it just to kill evil in name of the Holy?
Bathing in blood to make oneself blessed
In nómine Patris et Fílii et Spíritus Sancti

O those Irish boys and their sense of duty
How far will it lead them is not to be guessed
Is it just to kill evil in name of the Holy?

A family affair means they’ll never be lonely
For father and sons execution is their quest
In nómine Patris et Fílii et Spíritus Sancti

God-guided or murderously psychotic? Only
the Lord knows if they truly help the distressed
Is it just to kill evil in name of the Holy?

Retribution for God or their own vanity?
Three men on a mission that cannot be dismissed
In nómine Patris et Fílii et Spíritus Sancti

The blood of the wicked will pour for folly
For right or wrong, the Saints will not rest
Is it just to kill evil in name of the Holy?
In nómine Patris et Fílli et Spíritus Sancti
